Martial arts are a fantastic way to achieve health, well being, and self defence for the whole family. Martial arts achieve this through bringing both the mind and the body into balance and harmony. learning martial_artsSo what's the difference between sports and martial arts? Of course there is some cross over between martial arts and sports, for instance, you may improve your fitness, coordination, and flexibility whilst learning skills in both sports and martial arts (although flexibility work is minimal in most sports). A key difference however, is that sports do not specifically set out to teach things like focus, self-discipline, confidence, and the like. Think of the people you most admire in life such as those who are successful in business, sport, school, or the community. They are normally confident, determined or disciplined, and focussed. While these aren't things we tend to think about in every day life, they are important, and will ultimately help us achieve success in whatever we set out to do, but where do you learn them? Martial arts! Focus, self-discipline, and confidence, will assist at everything including sports, and may improve incidentally from participating in sports, however sports do not specifically set out to teach them. Finally, in sports you are generally competing against others, where in martial arts you are only competing to improve yourself.

The martial arts of Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu are taught at BTC. The BJJ classes include traditional, self-defence, and sports BJJ, while the Taekwondo classes include traditional Taekwondo and Hapkido, as well as aspects of boxing, karate, kung fu, and judo, so that you can learn a fun, modern, and practical style of martial arts and self defence. In additional to this we also offer separate sports Taekwondo classes, and a stretch out the stress class which includes modern meditation and focus training.
