The Two Major forms of Jiujitsu

Jujitsu comes in two major forms, the Japanese style, and the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Both Jujitsu types involve joint locks and grappling and are self defence martial arts, but there are also some significant differences.

Brazilian Jiujitsu

Jujitsu in its Brazilian form, also known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ specialises in ground techniques. If presented with a situation where you and the attacker are standing, they will seek to redirect the attack and take the attacker to the ground, then submit them via a joint lock or choke.

If you're not familiar with this form of Jujitsu, this may sound a little strange, however it is very effective and has been used to good advantage in MMA and UFC style competitions.

Japanese Jiujitsu

Jujitsu in its Japanese form is mainly a 'stand up' style of self defence where if an attacker tried to redirect the attack and apply a joint lock, which may in some instances also end up on the ground.

If you're having trouble picturing the difference between the two styles, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu often looks a little like wrestling once they are on the ground. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is also one of the fastest growing martial arts in Australia.
