Taekwondo Korean Terminology

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

This section of the BTC blog is a fantastic resource for learning Korean terms.  You’ll find general information as well as terms for each level, and within each category you can review the list of terms as well as actually play the terms so you can hear what they sound like.  You can also download an mp3 of each list for your iPod/MP3 player, or a wav to burn and play on a regular CD/DVD player.

ps don’t forget to take advantage of the RSS service via “watch this blog with RSS” at the top right.  If you’re not familiar with RSS, it’s a really simple way to keep up to date with the latest additions to the blog in a particular section.  When you subribe via RSS you will be automatically notified of updates and be able to click straight through to check them out.

Korean Terminology

Friday, August 21st, 2009

At first the Korean terms used by your Instructor may seem very strange, and perhaps even a little overwhelming (‘I don’t understand what he’s saying’).  Don’t worry, this is perfectly natural.  You are not expected to know any Korean terms as a white or yellow belt, but I’m sure you will pick up many over time without even realising it. (more…)

Formulation of Korean Terms

Friday, August 21st, 2009

  • Korean Taekwondo terms are generally constructed as follows:

Part of body used + height + technique

e.g., knifehand low block

Han

Sonnal

Arae

Makki

Single

Knifehand

Low

Block

  • Common techniques are abbreviated, for example:

Body block technically is “anpalmok momtong makki”

but becomes “momtong makki”
